Early Spring Color

After a long, cold winter most gardeners are itching to get outside and start planting. Since early spring always holds the chance of frost, the choices of what you can plant are limited, but you can still add some early color and bring some life to your landscape long before Memorial Day with cold-tolerant blooming annuals. Our selection of cold tolerant annuals is always fresh and healthy because we grow most of them locally.

Pansies

Pansies are probably the most popular cold tolerant annual. They're prolific bloomers that produce large, colorful flowers over a long period of time. They're available in many shades of red, orange, yellow, blue and purple. Pansies do best in sun to part shade with moist, well drained soil, and can be grown in containers, window boxes or planted in the ground.

Nemesia

Nemesia are prolific bloomers that produce fragrant, delicate, wonderfully-colored flowers. They have an upright growing habit, making them an ideal annual to give vertical drama in the middle of a combo planter or window box. They're easy to grow, thrive in partial shade, and they don't require deadheading.

Dusty Miller

Dusty Miller provides soft gray, almost white leaves that help show off other plants. In addition to those with bold, white leaves, look for the fine, feathery varieties that offer a more subtle contrast. Dusty miller does its best in sun but will tolerate light shade. Most varieties grow 8-12 inches tall.

Alyssum

This is a great low-growing annual for borders and containers. Alyssum forms clusters of tiny, sweetly fragranced flowers, commonly available in white, purple and rose. It does best in bright areas but prefers to be shaded from the hot afternoon sun. Alyssum should be planted in well-drained soil and fertilized often for continuous flowering. It can be cut back when it gets floppy.

Osteospermum

Osteospermum is a very showy flowering annual with large, intensely-colored, daisy-like blossoms. They come in many shades of yellow, orange, pink and purple. Osteospermum do best in a sunny location but will tolerate light shade. Plant in well-drained soil and fertilize often for continuous flowering.

Snapdragons

Snapdragons have a narrow, upright growth habit with intricate flowers that add a vertical contrast to the garden or planter. Snapdragons come in an enormous variety of colors and prefer full sun, regular water and rich, well-drained soil.

Diacia

Very similar to Nemesia, Diacia is a vigorous annual with delicate flowers that cover mounds of foliage. Easy to grow and works well in containers and window boxes. Prefers sun to part shade with moist, well-drained soil.
